Abstract Background As a vegan diet is per definition plant-based diet, consumers rely on plant protein sources in order to substitute animal proteins. Plant commonly used this context are the following: cereals, like wheat ( Triticum aestivum, durum ), oat flakes; pseudo cereals quinoa; nuts and oil seeds cashew Anacardium occidentale hazelnut Corylus avellana walnut Juglans regia ); psyllium Plantago ovata sesame Sesamum indicum chia seed Salvia hispanica ). Methods In assess allergy risk posed by literature search focusing composition of particular whether respective foods potentially allergenic was performed. Results At first glance, it evident for allergologists that these well-known allergen sources. Particularly legumes harbour storage proteins, oleosins, lipid transfer proteins as such associated with severe allergic reactions food. addition, there increasing evidence simultaneous consumption several may produce summation effect where many single allergens high potential sum up, thereby inducing anaphylaxis. Furthermore, food processing—or lack it—puts patients pollen-associated at react some diets. Conclusion Therefore, individuals history atopy should be educated regarding diet.
